The Networking Reception, organised to celebrate the fair’s opening, gave VIP buyers, industry players and international media a chance to relax at the end of a hectic first day of business. Guests were entertained with a lucky draw and fashion parade as well as enjoying drinks and canapés, while taking the opportunity to greet old friends and make new connections.
Mr Benjamin Chau, Deputy Executive Director of HKTDC (fourth from the left) and members of the HKTDC Garment Advisory Committee raise their glasses to toast the fair’s success.
The seminar on the topical issue of “Reducing Textile Waste Through Sustainable Design”, offered up a range of interesting propositions and ideas in the panel discussion. It was organised by Redress, which promotes environmental sustainability in the Asian fashion industry.
The panel discussion, moderated by Redress' CEO Christina Dean (middle), features presentations from a number of distinguished fashion insiders, namely, from left to right, Barney Cheng, Fashion Designer, Anderson Lee, Business Director, Hong Kong Non-Woven Fabric Ind Co, Ltd and Vice Chairman, Sustainable Fashion Business Consortium, Margaret Kutt, Manager, Sustainable Projects, Esprit De Corps and Do Do Yeung, Publisher, ELLE Hong Kong.

“Our waxed-cotton coats and jackets are made for wet and cold weather, not suitable for the warm weather in Hong Kong. But we decided to come to the Hong Kong Fashion Week to promote them because this fair is the only international fair in the Far East which offers a platform for us reach out to buyers from Asian countries such as Japan, South Korea and Chinese mainland where quality garments for real winters are needed. I got to know the fair in 1996 when I came as a buyer to import from the Chinese mainland. Now that our home market in the U.K. has reached saturation, I have come back as a supplier to expand into new markets in Asia.”
Kulvinder Raindi, Senior Partner, K & K Clothing, United Kingdom

“Our booth features the New Fashion Taiwan collection of bags, shoes, fashion jewelry and garments from 17 Taiwan companies. It is a government-subsidised project coordinated by the Taiwan Design Centre; therefore we have come here to showcase designs inspired by the history, culture and nature that are unique to the island. Hong Kong is the capital of fashion for the Chinese world. That's why we choose to come here to promote Taiwan fashion to the Mainland, Hong Kong and Macau; our next steps will be Asia and the rest of the world.
Joyce Chou, Project Manager, Taiwan Design Centre, Taiwan

Fashion Week is covered by media from all over the world, and members of the international press received a briefing on the fashion industry from HKTDC at a breakfast meeting also attended by a number of exhibitors and industry players. This provided opportunity for the journalists to chat one-on-one for more in-depth information.

The breakfast was hosted by Mr Stanley Szeto, member of the HKTDC Garment Advisory Committee and Chairman & Chief Executive Officer, Lever Style Inc.
Mr Isham Sardouk, Senior Vice President, Trend Forecasting in London of Stylesight briefs the audience on what to expect in the fashion world in upcoming seasons.
Participants in this seminar received much advice on “New Channels to Tap the Taiwan Garment Industry”.
“We manage four brands that feature men's surf wear, casual wear, ladies' garments and accessories. Global Co. was founded in 1988 and we started to visit Hong Kong Fashion Week in 2011. Currently we buy 70% of our merchandise here; they include shirts, sweaters, hoodies, fleece products and PU jackets. I found the T-shirts interesting because of the variety of fabrics they are made of and the reasonable price. During our last visit we have bought over 200 items totalling up to US$1 million. All along, the organiser has been very helpful by sending needed information and setting up appointments. Hong Kong is a great place to shop.
Ana Godoy, Product Development Manager, Global Co., Brazil

“My company has been in the shoe and garment business for the past quarter of a century and made the "Activ" brand famous, importing OEM items from the Far East and Europe to the Middle East. We operate 35 shops in Egypt and undertake wholesale to Saudi Arabia, Dubai and Lybia. We also supply the government with army and police shoes and uniforms. I placed orders worth US$300,000 at this fair during my last visit. This time I found some jeans, pants and cotton garments interesting and I plan to follow up with the five to six mainland suppliers. The Hong Kong Fashion Week is important to us in the sense that it is a reliable platform of trade and we can trust the suppliers we find here. ”
